The power of defining yourself | Amma Asante | TEDxBrixton

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Amma Asante is the director of the Hollywood hit movie Belle and found that working in Hollywood where only 0.4% of directors are black females, she has been under pressure to live up to a definition bestowed upon her; one that did not match own own self definition. A passionate speaker, Amma asks us to consider that we are all a combination of many worlds put together and when those worlds meet, progress can follow.

BAFTA award winning writer-director Amma Asante began her career as a child actress, appearing as a regular in the popular British school drama Grange Hill.

She fronted the «Just Say No» campaign of the 1980s and was one of nine Grange Hill children to take it to the Reagan White House.

Asantes 2004 feature film, A Way of Life, was her directorial debut and garnered her 17 international awards for her writing and directing including newcomer awards for writing and directing from the BFI London Film Festival, The Times Breakthrough Artist of the Year and the prestigious South Bank Show Awards. Asante’s second feature film, Belle was released in cinemas in 2014. The film drew widespread acclaim and is the third highest grossing independent film of 2014. In January this year Asante was announced as one of Varietys ‘10 Directors to Watch.’ Follow her on Twitter @AmmaAsante

Teach Your Inner Critic a New Story | Kari Romeo | TEDxCoeurdalene

By changing the way she talked and thought about herself, Kari Romeo was able to turn insecurity into joy, doubt into confidence, and shame into self-love. This is the story of how she became a more happy, confident woman. Kari believes that every human being has unlimited potential and that the key to unlocking that potential is learning to love ourselves. For most of her life, Kari doubted her abilities, her self-worth and struggled with a poor self-image. To the outsider, she seemed quite successful, giving little indication of the almost constant negative discourse going on in her own head. When Kari finally learned to love and appreciate herself, she found her pathway to success and happiness. Now she brings simple steps to help others release themselves from their judgmental prisons and open a world of unlimited potential.

Neuroconservation -- your brain on nature: Wallace J. Nichols at TEDxSantaCruz

Marine scientist and ocean advocate Wallace «J.» Nichols explores the neuroscience of our brains on nature, and posits that our love of the natural world holds the key to preserving it.

This TEDxSantaCruz talk is one of 22 surrounding our theme of «Activate» at the third full-day TEDxSantaCruz event held March 8, 2014 at the Hotel Paradox in Santa Cruz, CA. www.tedxsantacruz.org/

Dr. Wallace «J.» Nichols is a scientist, ocean advocate, community organizer, author, and dad. He takes a slow, collaborative approach with leaders in businesses, government, non-profits, and academia to inspire a deeper connection with nature. Sometimes through adventures, or simply by walking and talking. Other times through writing, images, and art. Science and knowledge can also stoke our fires. But he knows that what really moves people is feeling part of and touching something bigger than ourselves. J. is a Research Associate at California Academy of Sciences and co-founder of OceanRevolution.org, an international network of young ocean advocates, SEEtheWILD.org, a conservation travel network, GrupoTortuguero.org, an international sea turtle conservation network, and LiVBLUE.org, a global campaign to reconnect us to our water planet. He has authored and co-authored more than 50 scientific papers and reports and his work has been broadcast on NPR, BBC, PBS, National Geographic and Animal Planet and featured in Time, Newsweek, GQ, Outside Magazine, Fast Company, Scientific American, and New Scientist, among others. J. lives with his partner Dana, two daughters and some cats, dogs and chickens on Californias SLOWCOAST, a rural stretch of coastal mountains where organic strawberries rule, mountain lions roam and their motto is «In Slow We Trust.» Lately he is working on Blue Mind, merging the fields of neuropsychology and aquatic exploration to foster a deeper appreciation of the emotional and cognitive benefits of healthy waterways and oceans. wallacejnichols.org/
