In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
Why learn another language? Words provide us with the ability for connection, empathy and perspective-taking. And when you learn multiple languages you improve your brain, you accelerate your capacity to learn, and you become a better communicator. Vitally, you are also able to step into the world of another human being. To truly understand them and speak to their heart. The question isn’t why should you learn a language, it’s why wouldn’t you. Louka Parry is an award-winning educator and hyperlearner who speaks five languages, holds two Masters degrees and has traveled to over 50 countries. After growing up monolingual in the city of Adelaide, Australia, Louka moved to Europe and uncovered a passion for languages, culture and learning. He returned to Australia to become a teacher and began his career in a very remote Aboriginal community, now working globally to help transform schools and learning. He continues to accumulate languages and advocates for all of us to step into the unknown to grow, connect and thrive. In this TEDxUniversityofNicosia talk Nicoletta, an ethnomusicologist and tutor in creative writing, explains exactly how to go about writing in our everyday lives.
Nicoletta Demetriou studied music in Thessaloniki, Vienna, and London. Her PhD (School of Oriental and African Studies [SOAS], University of London, 2008) was in the field of ethnomusicology. Her research focuses on Cypriot traditional music, and particularly on how issues pertaining to ideology, politics, and identity influence the way traditional music is discussed and performed. She has also studied creative writing, specializing in life (auto/biographical) writing. Her current research is an attempt to bring ethnomusicology and life writing together, focusing on the lives of traditional music performers. Since 2012 Nicoletta has been a research fellow in ethnomusicology and life writing at Wolfson College, University of Oxford, and also a tutor in narrative non-fiction on Oxford’s Master of Studies in Creative Writing.

World renowned beatboxer Tom Thum takes you on a journey through sound. With shades of driving drums, stomach churning bass, deafening silence and soulful pitch perfect vocals, Tom invites his audience to explore the sordid love affair. This musical phenomenon showcases that what makes him whole, his music.
Climaxing in his own personal ode to silence, Tom unveils the newest piece in his arsenal, the gorgeous “Love has left here”. Not only showing his amazing ability to carve lush, emotion inducing arrangements through nothing more than the textures in his throat, it’s his unprecedented ability as a singer that is the real show stopper.
It’s been said many times that Beat Boxer Tom Thum appears to have not only a symphony orchestra but also a jazz band, techno DJ, 80’s synth pop group and collection of exotic world instruments all residing somewhere in his throat.
Propelled to Internet stardom with his 2013 TEDx performance at the Sydney Opera House, Tom’s 15 minute showcase quickly became the highest viewed TEDx video of all time with over 70 million views and counting. Now recognised worldwide for his obscure talent to warp and manipulate his vocal chords, Tom Thum provides confirmation to his audience that there is no sound he cannot mimic to perfection. You may wonder how a beatboxer and an orchestra can work together?
Acclaimed beatboxer Tom Thum and classical powerhouse Gordon Hamilton show you exactly how, as they showcase their world renowned concerto for beatbox and orchestra, Thum Prints.
Together with The Bombay Chamber Orchestra, they deliver a never before seen sneak peak into this globe trotting symphonic project. At first glance, you’d struggle to find a greater example of artistic polar opposites, yet anyone lucky enough to have witnessed this creative alliance would agree that the two compliment each other perfectly.
Executing performances with some of the worlds most renowned orchestras, such as the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Malaysian Philharmonic, Cologne’s WDR Funkhausorchester, Florida’s Imperial Symphony Orchestra, Nürnberg Symphoniker, and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra to name a few, the pair have been turning concert halls on their heads and continuing to wow audiences with this remarkable collaboration.
Simply titled, ‘Thum Prints’ this boundary pushing symphony comprises mainly of original compositions, wholly written by Tom and Gordon. Bridged by comedic interludes, it has the ability to be programmed as a full 60 minute show, or as a 20 minute concerto in a longer symphonic program.
