In this fascinating and hilarious talk, cognitive scientist Philip Fernbach peels back the layers of what we really know and reveals some surprising truths about the human mind. Philip Fernbach is a cognitive scientist and professor in the Leeds School of Business at the University of Colorado, Boulder. Co-author of The Knowledge Ilusion: Why We Never Think Alone, Philips research focuses on why we think we know more than we actually do and the implications this has on individuals and society. He lives in Boulder with his wife and two children. In his free time, he plays bluegrass music and ice hockey. Imagination is not what you think. It’s how you think. Cognitive research reveals that images, metaphors and stories are the basis of our mental operating system: the origin of our intuitions and our irrationality. Counterintuitively, more accurate insights do not come from increasing information or reason, but educating our imagination.

Charles Faulkner is an independent researcher on language and its effects on communication, decision-making and change. He has worked in the Silicon Valley, ‘the City’ of London and 3M, HP, IBM, HSBC and Cargill. His decision-making work is featured in books including The New Market Wizards. His popular works include the audio programs: The New Technology of Achievement, Success Mastery, and Creating Irresistible Influence. His original work on metaphoric communication and change is documented in three programs. He has lectured in 15 countries including at the University of Chicago, Columbia College NYC, the Sorbonne, and London School of Economics.

Why learn another language? Words provide us with the ability for connection, empathy and perspective-taking. And when you learn multiple languages you improve your brain, you accelerate your capacity to learn, and you become a better communicator. Louka Parry is an award-winning educator and hyperlearner who speaks five languages, holds two Masters degrees and has traveled to over 50 countries. After growing up monolingual in the city of Adelaide, Australia, Louka moved to Europe and uncovered a passion for languages, culture and learning. He returned to Australia to become a teacher and began his career in a very remote Aboriginal community, now working globally to help transform schools and learning. He continues to accumulate languages and advocates for all of us to step into the unknown to grow, connect and thrive. One can learn to communicate in English in a couple of weeks. A small number of words and basic grammar is enough to cope with everyday situations. Language is correct when others can understand it.

Elizabeth speaks volumes from her own experience battling mental illness and how it is not a personal problem, but a communal one for which we are all responsible to address.

Elizabeth is a junior at the University of Texas at Austin studying Chemistry. She is a pre-medical student hoping to one day run her own practice and use a combination of diet, therapy, and medicine to heal the physical and psychological wounds of her patients. She is the proud owner of her mini wiener dog Bella, who helped her heal and grow through some of her lifes toughest battles.
