Amma Asante is the director of the Hollywood hit movie Belle and found that working in Hollywood where only 0.4% of directors are black females, she has been under pressure to live up to a definition bestowed upon her; one that did not match own own self definition. A passionate speaker, Amma asks us to consider that we are all a combination of many worlds put together and when those worlds meet, progress can follow.
BAFTA award winning writer-director Amma Asante began her career as a child actress, appearing as a regular in the popular British school drama Grange Hill.
She fronted the «Just Say No» campaign of the 1980s and was one of nine Grange Hill children to take it to the Reagan White House.
Asantes 2004 feature film, A Way of Life, was her directorial debut and garnered her 17 international awards for her writing and directing including newcomer awards for writing and directing from the BFI London Film Festival, The Times Breakthrough Artist of the Year and the prestigious South Bank Show Awards. Asante’s second feature film, Belle was released in cinemas in 2014. The film drew widespread acclaim and is the third highest grossing independent film of 2014. Nous avons été prof de français. Sommés de nous offusquer des fautes dorthographe, nous avons été pris pour les curés de la langue. Nous avons écrit pour dédramatiser, pour réfléchir ensemble et puis aussi parce quon a toujours pensé que lAcadémie Française avait un vrai potentiel comique.
«Les deux belges qui veulent simplifier la langue française»: tout est faux dans cette phrase. Pas «simplifier» mais bien faire preuve desprit critique, se demander si tout se vaut dans notre orthographe. Pas deux belges, mais bien deux curieux qui veulent transmettre le travail des linguistes de toute la francophonie, pas même la «langue française», seulement son orthographe. Car lorthographe, cest pas la langue, cest juste le code graphique qui permet de la retranscrire. Passion pour les uns, chemin de croix pour les autres, elle est sacrée pour tous. Et pourtant, il ne sagit peut-être que dun énorme malentendu. Arnaud Hoedt et Jérôme Piron sont linguistes de formation. Ils ont vécu 25 ans sans se connaître, mais c’était moins bien. Ils ont ensuite enseigné pendant 15 ans dans la même école. Quand Arnaud participe à la rédaction des programmes de français en Belgique, Jérôme se spécialise en médiation culturelle. En 2016, ils écrivent et mettent en scène le spectacle « La Convivialité », au Théâtre National de Bruxelles. Ce spectacle conférence qui traite de la question du rapport dogmatique à l’orthographe tourne depuis 3 ans dans toute la francophonie. Dans la foulée, ils publient l’ouvrage « La faute de l’orthographe », aux éditions Textuel. Ils se définissent comme suit: « Linguistes dilet(t)antes. Pédagogues en (robe de) chambre. Tentent de corriger le participe passé. Écrivent des trucs. Vrais-Faux Comédiens. Bouffeurs d’Académicien ».

Do you know how many countries there are in the world? 21-year-old Lexie does because she took on the adventure to visit them all. She broke the Guinness World Record for the youngest person to travel to every country in the world. To give this achievement some context, more people have been to space than have traveled to all 196 sovereign nations and approximately less than 20 of those people are women. In this TEDx talk, Lexie shares her stories from around the world to inspire others, especially young women, to follow their dreams, to get out of their comfort zone and to stimulate personal growth. Lexie Alford was born in a small town called Nevada City, California. She has been traveling for as long as she can remember with her family who started a travel agency. She traveled to all 196 countries by 21 years old, breaking the Guinness World Record for the Youngest Person to Travel to Every Country by over 3 years. In this TEDxUniversityofNicosia talk Nicoletta, an ethnomusicologist and tutor in creative writing, explains exactly how to go about writing in our everyday lives.
Nicoletta Demetriou studied music in Thessaloniki, Vienna, and London. Her PhD (School of Oriental and African Studies [SOAS], University of London, 2008) was in the field of ethnomusicology. Her research focuses on Cypriot traditional music, and particularly on how issues pertaining to ideology, politics, and identity influence the way traditional music is discussed and performed. She has also studied creative writing, specializing in life (auto/biographical) writing. Her current research is an attempt to bring ethnomusicology and life writing together, focusing on the lives of traditional music performers. Since 2012 Nicoletta has been a research fellow in ethnomusicology and life writing at Wolfson College, University of Oxford, and also a tutor in narrative non-fiction on Oxford’s Master of Studies in Creative Writing.

After a boy threatened to kill her with a machete, Lynne Franklin decided to learn everything she could about persuasion. She became a neuroscience nerd, studying how the brain works and how to build rapport with people. She has since worked with organizations to use persuasive communication to increase their performance, productivity, and profit, and published a book about her personal research called Getting Others to Do What You Want. In addition to her marketing and consulting work, Lynne is a member of the National Speakers Association and President-elect of its Illinois chapter.
