Robin Esrocks success as a global adventurer, travel writer, TV producer and international TV personality was no accident, although it did start with one. Struck down on his bike at a Vancouver intersection, Robin hobbled away with a broken kneecap, and one year later, a modest $20,000 insurance settlement. It was just enough for him pack up his things, quit his job, and set off on a one-year solo round-the-world backpacking adventure to 24 countries. He named his journey Modern Gonzo, and committed to record his year of living dangerously, with online weekly reports, photography, videos, and interviews with every person he met. This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Why are we getting richer but not happier? Why do lottery winners not have sustained happiness? Why are bronze medalists often happier than silver medalists? “The first step to being happy is to understand why we’re often unhappy,” says economist and entrepreneur Nat Ware. In an entertaining and enlightening talk, Nat shows that we’re bad predictors of happiness, and explains why this is. We make decisions based on actual outcomes, Nat says, but our happiness depends on relative outcomes. We’ve been seduced into a way of life that conspires against our contentment by making it near impossible for reality to live up to our expectations. It is this expectation gap – the gap between our expectations and reality – that Nat argues is a key reason we’re unhappy. Nat challenges us to not relegate happiness to the world of art and the realm of hippies, but to start taking happiness seriously. The answer is not to simply lower our expectations, but rather to change the very way in which we make decisions.
Nat Ware is an economist, entrepreneur, and international development specialist. He is a Rhodes Scholar based at Oxford University, whose research focuses on social impact, poverty alleviation, and the economics of happiness. He is the Founder and CEO of 180 Degrees Consulting, the world’s largest university-based consultancy, with operations in 24 countries and over 4000 consultants worldwide. 180 Degrees has provided over US$50M worth of consulting services to non-profits and social enterprises so they can operate more effectively (www.180dc.org). Nat has lectured on innovation, strategy and global business at The University of Sydney, and was awarded the Saïd Prize for Top MBA Student at Oxford. He is a frequent keynote speaker at international conferences and events, and has consulted for many of the worlds largest foundations and non-profit organizations. Программа «О жизни, любви, смерти и памяти»
Программу встреч, организованный Благотворительным фондом «Дом с маяком» в партнерстве с Еврейским музеем и Центром толерантности, мы решили посвятить обсуждению фундаментальных и неотъемлемых составляющих человеческого существования «жизни, любви, смерти и памяти».
О Доме с маяком
Детский хоспис «Дом с маяком» — это частное медицинское благотворительное учреждение. Мы назвали наш хоспис «Дом с маяком», потому что, когда в семье неизлечимо болен ребенок, это похоже на шторм: земля уходит из-под ног, и вокруг темнота. Маяк подает сигнал — на свете есть место, где помогут справиться с болью, там дружат и играют с детьми, радуются каждому дню.
Стационар Детского хосписа строится. С 2013 года на территории Москвы и Московской области работает выездная служба паллиативной помощи. За год в среднем 800 детей получают помощь.
Детский хоспис заботится о качестве жизни больного ребенка и всей его семьи. Мы не занимаемся лечением основного заболевания или реабилитацией, но лечим симптомы и создаем условия, чтобы ребенок и вся семья могли жить максимально полной, активной, нормальной жизнью — у себя дома, а не в больнице. Детский хоспис — это не только медицинский уход. Это игры и веселые праздники, загородные лагеря, это забота о братьях и сестрах, мамах и папах, бабушках и дедушках. Хоспис исполняет мечты детей, дает передышку родителям и поддерживает семью и после утраты ребенка. Детский хоспис — это комплексная медицинская, социальная, психологическая и духовная помощь для всей семьи.
Детский хоспис «Дом с маяком» существует на благотворительные пожертвования.
В Сьюдад Хуаресе мы договорились встретиться с Ильей, он учится в университете в Мехико по обмену и немного знает испанский, он уже гонял на грузовых поездах по Мексике и России, поэтому понимает что к чему. Сейчас Семана Санта: в школах и университетах каникулы. Мы идем вдоль железной дороги, около которой нам предстоит провести пятнадцать часов, ночью мы найдем старый матрац и заночуем на отшибе, часа в четыре утра нас разбудит мексиканец со словами:
— Comida, comida! — протягивая нам завернутый в кукурузный лист рис.
Добро пожаловать в самый опасный город Мексики!
В начале второй части третьего тома «Войны и мира» автор рассуждает о событиях войны 1812 года и роли в ней Александра и Наполеона. Толстой пишет, что их воля, по сути, не имела никакого значения.
Наполеон движется вглубь страны, подходит к Смоленску. Жители Смоленска сжигают город и направляются к Москве, «разжигая ненависть к врагу» среди жителей других городов.
